About the header image: July 30, 2014

Last October I decided to go out and photograph the sunset from the Nanticoke - West Nanticoke bridge over the Susquehanna River. The sunset was nothing spectacular, but I realized that Venus would be showing up low in the West as twilight turned to dusk. (It's visible in this image, though just barely - nearly dead center, to the left of the central vertical girder, to the right of the fourth rivet from the bottom in the big girder.) In trying to capture Venus, I accidentally captured something beautiful as the sodium vapor lights caused the white-painted girders to show up in a false deep rust color, in sharp contrast to the sunset colors of the sky.

PA Live! Blog of the Week: Running the Poconos

NEPA Blogs will be presenting the "Blog of the Week" on WBRE's PA Live! every Tuesday. PA Live! airs weekday afternoons on WBRE from 4:00 to 5:00.

Our PA Live! Blog of the Week this week is Running the Poconos  (http://blogs.thepoconos.com/running-the-poconos/).

Since January 2013, Ed Hasker has blogged about running throughout the Poconos for the Pocono Record at the online site blogs.thepoconos.com. His writing takes us on a journey through the Poconos from the point of view of a runner. Whether you're a runner, are interested in running, or are interested in seeing the Poconos in a whole new light, you'll find something fascinating in his blog, Running the Poconos!

About the header image, July 23, 2014

A broken washing machine meant a few trips to the laundromat. I decided to use to one near the Tractor Supply on the Sans Souci Parkway in Hanover Township. I noticed that the parking lot there had a nice view of the western sky, so I timed one of my visits to coincide with sunset. This particular sunset featured colors that were subdued rather than spectacular, but it still made for some pretty pictures.

There was actually quite a bit going on in the sky at the time. Here's a photo from a few minutes earlier:

PA Live! Blog of the Week: Independent NEPA

NEPA Blogs will be presenting the "Blog of the Week" on WBRE's PA Live! every Tuesday. PA Live! airs weekday afternoons on WBRE from 4:00 to 5:00.

Our PA Live! Blog of the Week this week is Independent NEPA  (http://independentnepa.com/component/content/frontpage).

"Print is dead," Harold Ramis's character announced in an oddly jarring and out-of-place line in 1984's Ghostbusters. Thirty years later, print is still with us. (Harold Ramis, sadly, is not; he passed away a few months ago.) In many cases, print survives by keeping one foot in the online world, creating a web presence that complements and is complemented by its print counterpart.

Independent NEPA is Northeastern Pennsylvania's independent magazine, available free of charge at many locations. You may have picked up a copy in a waiting room somewhere, or sought out a copy featuring people or events in NEPA that are important to you.
Independent NEPA is the online counterpart to the magazine, presenting - in blog form - some of the content contained in the magazine. It's an excellent way of referencing information from past editions, or finding out about articles in the current edition and getting an incentive to seek out a hard copy.  (Coincidentally, the top article as I write this is a piece called "Print is not dead.")

If you'd like to see a great, locally-produced, independent magazine featuring articles by and about folks from Northeastern Pennsylvania, pick up a copy of Independent PA. If you'd like to see what this magazine is all about, check out their blog, Independent NEPA.

About the header image, July 16, 2014

This past weekend's "Supermoon" was only marginally brighter and larger than last month's full moon, and next month's will be even bigger and brighter, but it would take some doing to detect the difference visually. Still, that didn't stop a lot of people from trying to see the difference. I got a few good pictures of the moon, just as I try to do every evening that there's a visible moon. But I had to shoot fast, in between huge banks of clouds drifting across the sky. I took the shot above in a fit of exasperation, trying to document what I was up against. I looked at the result and realized it looked pretty good anyway!

Past headers, Part 2

We've been changing the headers on NEPA Blogs at least once a week since May 2011. That's added up to a lot of header images in the Past headers post. Maybe too many! The past few times I tried posting headers there, it was all wonky. So I'm starting a second post to showcase the next three years or so of headers. Enjoy!
