Blog Fest is coming! 

Northeastern Pennsylvania Bloggers will be hosting the 9th semi-annual Blogfest, Thursday October 30th at The Red Mill, 340 S. Main St., Pittston, PA starting at 6PM. This is an informal gathering of bloggers, candidates for office, elected officials and anyone interested in politics or blogging. There is no charge for admission. They're baaaa-aaaack!

This may be old news to some, but two guys who had taken time-outs from blogging are back.

Tom Borthwick took a sabbatical to run for school board and get married.  He's back to blogging semi-regularly at http://www.tomborthwick.com.  Tom's blog features topics about politics and writing.

Frank Knorek retired his personal blog approximately a year ago.  He's back again with a food review blog called "NEPA Culinary Review" which can be found at http://nepaculinaryreview.wordpress.com.  According to the about page, the NEPA Culinary Review blog is  your source for news and information surrounding the recipes, people, and places relating to good food and drink in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

If you haven't visited in a while, you should take another look at Andy's blog.  Right now he has some bad photography featuring buildings in Wilkes-Barre that may be on the endangered list (staying with our Hotel Sterling theme on our blog this week).  I must say that Andy is probably one of the more dedicated bloggers I know.  He posts something new every day.  I wish I had that level of energy for my personal blog!

Scranton is Broke

Unless you have been living in a closet or under a rock for the last few weeks, chances are you've already heard about the growing financial problems in the City of Scranton.  Scranton is broke.  And now there is a blog about it by the same name....

The Westside Bulletin invites you to submit your news about community events related to your school, church, sports, youth organizations, etc. We also welcome information regarding birthdays, engagements, anniversaries, and upcoming events.

You can also view each monthly edition on their website under the "Monthly Editions" link.  I haven't been able to find any social media presence for this publication.

I could not find a detailed about section on their blog explaining their mission, but the Wilkes-Barre Independent Gazette is essentially a by the people, for the people publication.

You may already be familiar with some of the staff members:  Lou Jasikoff (Publisher), Holly Anderson (Executive Editor), Frank Sorick (Contributing Editor), Betsy Summers (Contributing Editor), Carl Romanelli (Contributing Editor), and Anthony Antonello (Investigative Journalist).

The only social media presence I could find for the Gazette was a Facebook group which is locked to the general population.  You need to request to join.

Sometimes they come back

If you scroll down along our right-hand sidebar, past the buttons and badges, past the list of NEPA Bloggers RSS Updates, past the other list called NEPA Bloggers RSS Updates 2 that we had to start because Blogger has a still-unaddressed problem with lists becoming uneditable so you can't add to them, past the Blogs With Site Feed Issues list of blogs that don't show up properly (or at all) on RSS feed lists, you'll find a list called "Non-Updating Blogs," which includes the RSS feeds of blogs that have stopped updating.

Now, why would we have an RSS feed for a blog that stopped updating? Well, it's so that if they should ever start updating again, we'll have an easy way of finding out.

And guess what? Two of hem have!

Erin Delaney's poetry blog Living In Sections has come back to life after a hiatus of one and a half years. And Norton the Blogger has brought back One Vote Counts after being away for nearly three years! We'll be getting these blogs back onto the active lists soon! In the meantime, be sure to check them out!

Politics plays a big role in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and it's no surprise that some of the most popular blogs around are politically focused. We've already looked at Gort42, the blog that serves as the gateway to so many other political blogs in Northeastern Pennsylvania and beyond, and is a top-notch political blog in its own right, looking at national, state, and local politics. We've also looked at The LuLac Political Letter, which takes an in-depth look at politics on all levels, with special focus on Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties. Now we'll look at the third of the Big Three of political blogs in Northeastern Pennsylvania: Joe Valenti's Pittston Politics.

As the name suggests, Pittston Politics looks specifically at the political situation in Pittston and surrounding areas. And Pittston is always certain to serve up plenty of material for Joe's blog. Whether it's goings-on with the school board or just the day-to-day misadventures of local politicians, Joe covers it all.  His focus isn't exclusively on Pittston, though; the corruption and misdeeds of politicians, judges, attorneys, and other public figures throughout Luzerne County doesn't escape his scrutiny.

Pittston Politics is well-known among the local news media, and has been cited as a primary source in several news articles, and has been recognized as one of the top political blogs in Pennsylvania. The site is more ad-heavy than most, and like The LuLac Political Letter, finding past entries may be tricky, since they are indexed by date, not by title or subject. Joe is also (along with Gort) one of the founders of Blog Fest, and is the person who  convinced Rooney's (67 South Main Street in Pittston) to open its doors to the gathering.

The Spring 2012 Blog Fest will be taking place on Friday, March 30 at Rooney's in Pittston, at 67 South Main Street, with festivities beginning at 6:00. There is no admission fee, and the event is open to everyone, non-bloggers as well as bloggers. It's your opportunity to meet bloggers from throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania as well as politicians and candidates for political office, all in a relaxed, casual setting. Meet your senator or congressman face-to-face and let them know what's on your mind! Our PA Live! Blog of the Week this week is The LuLac Political Letter.

Politics, I've long observed, is the most popular contact sport in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and political blogs are among the most popular blogs in the area. Local author, commentator, and political maven David Yonki writes one of the most popular and well-reviewed political blogs in Northeastern Pennsylvania. It's called The LuLac Political Letter - the "Lu" and "Lac" referring to Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, respectively - and it focuses on "issues of politics on all levels," including state and national politics, as well as local and regional politics in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Dave also looks at pop culture, especially the pop culture of years gone by.

Make no mistake: this isn't objective reporting, this is blogging with a take-no-prisoners attitude. Dave will highlight corruption and double-dealing from anyone at any level, regardless of political affiliation. He'll go on at length about dirty little secrets that have come to light.  In The LuLac Political Letter Dave will write all about the little details that others might just brush aside, details that seem irrelevant at the moment but might turn out to be the basis for scandals months down the road. But in the next breath he'll tell you about the most popular songs and TV shows from this day forty-five years ago.

Dave's output is remarkable: he will write a full-length blog post every day, and sometimes multiple blog posts in a single day. One peculiarity of his site may prove frustrating to new readers: his posts are titles with "issue numbers" and dates, rather than descriptive titles, an anyone looking for anything specific from an older post will have to read through every past post (and he's rapidly closing in on 2,000 "editions" - he's been at this since May 6, 2006!) or perform a site scan for relevant keywords.

The LuLac Political Letter has been recognized by PoliticsPA.com as one of the state's best political blogs, and with good reason. Dave works very hard at what he does, and has made many contacts throughout the state and local political scenes. It should come as no surprise that Dave is one of the political organizers behind Blog Fest, which is coming up March 30 at Rooney's in Pittston. Through his efforts (and the efforts of local political bloggers Gort and Joe Valenti), numerous politicians and political office-seekers will be in attendance at Blog Fest, there to meet bloggers from throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania of every stripe, political as well as non-political.  Blog Fest is open to everyone, and it's your opportunity to meet these politicians and candidates in a relaxed, casual setting and let them know what's on your mind, as well as a chance to meet bloggers like David Yonki and many others. Our PA Live! Blog of the Week this week is Circumlocution for Dummies (http://mcour.blogspot.com/).

Mark Cour is this area's longest-running blogger. He's been at it for over twelve years, almost since before the word "blog" existed - so long that he's called "The Blogfather" by other local bloggers.  His original blog, Wilkes-Barre Online, focused primarily on politics and things going on in and around Wilkes-Barre, and his blog posts served as the uncredited sources for many newspaper, radio, and television news stories over the years. A few years ago he decided he was tired of putting so much effort into coding his own website when young upstarts were using blogging services that made blogging easy, even for dummies. And so Circumlocution for Dummies was born, a place where he could say what he had to say without putting all the tedious effort into getting his words to appear online.

"Circumlocution" means "to talk in circles," to speak in a roundabout manner that avoids getting to the point. And that's not something Mark does, ever. He doesn't mince words, and he doesn't pull punches. He says what he means and means what he says, whether he's talking about state, local, or national politics, fracking, kayaking, biking, or even his beloved New York Football Giants. He's outspoken, and odds are he's going to say something that will offend you. Deal with it. His blog isn't for the faint of heart - but neither is life. Whether you agree with what Mark has to say or not, he'll always give you something to think about.

Wake Up Wilkes-Barre

Fireman Dan tipped off Mark who tipped off me to the newest political blogger to pop up in the Blogosphere.

There is no "About Page" that I can find on the blog, so I will do my best to describe it in my own words. The blog's focus is specifically politics in Wilkes-Barre city. The author is anonymous. He/She describes himself/herself as follows (from the Blogger profile page) "A resident of the most corrupt city in the northeast, possible the county." The author is very much opposed to the campaign to re-elect Tom Leighton to another term as Mayor. The blog raises questions about the city's more controversial topics, such as the LAG Towing Contract, City Vest & the fate of the Hotel Sterling, as well as Leighton hiring some of his relatives.

Mark is not convinced this blog will be around after the election. According to him: "In reiteration, another election, another short-lived, fire-breathing blogger. What else is new?"

It is true, most political blogs that we list here at NEPA Blogs appear shortly before election day and then disappear or are abandoned thereafter. Maybe this one will survive after November. We'll see, I guess.

NEPA Blog Fest 2011 (Fall Edition)

Its that time of time of the year again. You can just smell autumn in the air, and the leaves are starting to fall ever-so slightly. That means one thing, and one thing only....TIME FOR NEPA BLOG FEST 2011 (Fall edition, of course). Do you like how I recycled the Spring logo image by cropping off the bottom? I'm a creative genius, what can I say....

Gort 42 posted the details on his blog yesterday and also created a Facebook event page.

It was so much fun the last 3 times we are going to do it again.

The next blogger meetup will be Friday September 23rd at Rooney's Irish Pub 67 S. Main St. Pittston, PA 18704 starting at 6PM.

Our political bloggers from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties will be there along with our readers, commenter's and people who are just interested in local politics. We should also have many candidates and their supporters.

You don't have to blog about about politics to attend as we welcome everyone who blogs. If you're listed on NEPA Blogs this is the place to be.

The promotion of this event is a bit behind schedule because of the flooding that has impacted just about everybody involved but there should be a good turnout. I'll do my best to get the word out and expect my blog buddies to do the same.

There are 3 rules to the event.

2. You must wear clothes even it is warm.

3. Agree to disagree but don't be disagreeable.

There is no charge for admission.

This is news from June, but it just popped up on the feed from Joe Valenti's Pittston Politics (which finally has a working feed, after languishing at the bottom of the right sidebar for several years! Granted, the title being supplied by the feed was "Front Page News:", but I've corrected that.)

The blogs in question are Joe Valenti's Pittston Politics and Dave Yonki's LuLac Political Letter, and the choices were made by the site PoliticsPA.com on the post PA's Best Political Blogs. PoliticsPA declared the LuLac Political Letter "Best Blog by Region" for NEPA¹, while Pittston Politics is listed as one of the "Best Local Blogs."

From the About Page: My name is Dan Cheek and I am the owner and author of StopLouBarletta.com. I started this website in April of 2008, shortly after Lou Barletta announced that he was mounting a second campaign for Congress. In my opinion, Barletta represented a horrible political candidate. He has, repeatedly, flip-flopped on important issues, refused to take stands on other issues, and has repeatedly used fear-mongering as his favorite political tactic. For all of these reasons, and more, I remain deeply opposed to Lou Barletta being elected to any higher office.

Luzerne County Courthouse News

Sadly, Northeastern Pennsylvania is in the news for all the wrong reasons these days. The big issue making national and international headlines is the ongoing scandal in the Luzerne County Courthouse. News is coming out of the courthouse so quickly that...well, let me just repost from Gort's blog here:
