Recently I received an email from my friend Laurel Radzieski, a poet and writer I met through our mutual writing group, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Writers' Collective. She's been working on her MFAW at Goddard College in Vermont, and has also been helping young poets in the northern reaches of NEPA to develop their craft. According to the first post, the name "The Last Dinosaur" is due to Dean's avoidance of the use of technology.  From the author's mouth:  "...I proudly referred to myself as a Luddite, refusing to join the rest of the world in its excitement over what seemed to be daily innovations in our rush to achieve the inevitable conclusions of our most foreboding science fiction"

Jenny Hill may be familiar to regular viewers of PA Live! As a member of Whirligig Hoopers, she appeared on the show in November 2011 to teach Dave and Monica how to hoop. But hooping was just one of Jenny Hill's many talents. She is also an accomplished poet, and she uses her eponymous blog Jenny Hill to share her poetry with the world. Jenny no longer lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania; she moved away to the Lancaster area a few months ago. So her blog now also serves to help her stay in contact with friends and fans in NEPA while she's off somewhere else.

Northeastern Pennsylvania is full of talented and creative people: hoopers, poets, artists, writers...all of whom could benefit from having a blog as a means of sharing their creative works with the rest of the world. A blog is a quick, simple, and free way of establishing your presence online and showing everyone what  you've got!

Our PA Live! Blog of the Week this week is Brian Fanelli's All the Right Notes (http://brianfanelli.wordpress.com/).

All the Right Notes is a blog by poet/writer Brian Fanelli, who was voted "Best Local Author in Lackawanna County" in the Electric City "Best Of 2011" poll. All the Right Notes is his personal blog. Brian is intensely involved in the large and thriving writing and poetry communities in Northeastern Pennsylvania as a writer, a poet, and an organizer. His blog is loaded with information for aspiring writers, as well as announcements of upcoming writing and poetry events and recaps of events that have passed.

Brian was among the many bloggers who came out to the Spring 2012 edition of BlogFest at the end of March, where he revealed that he is one of the people behind the 570writers.com site, a combination blog and calendar site listing upcoming writing and poetry events - meetings of writers' groups, poetry readings, open mic nights, and visits from renowned writers and poets to Northeastern Pennsylvania. Sometimes they come back

If you scroll down along our right-hand sidebar, past the buttons and badges, past the list of NEPA Bloggers RSS Updates, past the other list called NEPA Bloggers RSS Updates 2 that we had to start because Blogger has a still-unaddressed problem with lists becoming uneditable so you can't add to them, past the Blogs With Site Feed Issues list of blogs that don't show up properly (or at all) on RSS feed lists, you'll find a list called "Non-Updating Blogs," which includes the RSS feeds of blogs that have stopped updating.

Now, why would we have an RSS feed for a blog that stopped updating? Well, it's so that if they should ever start updating again, we'll have an easy way of finding out.

And guess what? Two of hem have!

Erin Delaney's poetry blog Living In Sections has come back to life after a hiatus of one and a half years. And Norton the Blogger has brought back One Vote Counts after being away for nearly three years! We'll be getting these blogs back onto the active lists soon! In the meantime, be sure to check them out!

From the Mailbag: An Organized Mess (My Life)

After our piece in the Weekender newspaper 2 weeks ago, we've been inundated with new mailbag requests from bloggers to give their blogs a mention here. It's either feast or famine around here, so we are enjoying keeping busy and all of the attention we are receiving. Our latest mailbag offering is from Stephanie Force, a Dallas High School Student, who blogs about poetry.

My name is Stephanie Force and I'm author of An Organized Mess (My Life). I had been out to dinner when I was looking over the Weekender and I saw the article for NEPA Blogfest. "I live in northeastern pennsylvania" + blog

That was the search I decided to try today. The phrase "i live in northeastern pennsylvania" plus the word "blog." It was a shot in the dark, but I thought it might yield some results. And it did.

Michelle Coulter has a blog on the Open Salon network which, as best I can tell, is called either "Fence Posts" or, more simply, "Michelle Coulter's Blog." I didn't discover her blog directly, but followed her back from a comment she left elsewhere that had the magic phrase in it. Judging by the content of the front page, it appears to be a poetry blog.

The second blog I found is called "Plank House Construction." From its "About Me" page:

Hello, my name is Dennis and I live in northeastern Pennsylvania. The reason I published this blog is one day I was going through a forum for a home repair website and I saw this question from a woman who has a plank house and was looking for information on how to go about remodeling it. Well. she got 3 or 4 replies and even had one from a contractor. A few tried to help but with a plank house, their suggestions were not very helpful. The contractor was not much help either. Most of the forums I go through the replies are to tear the house down and build a new house. For some people this might be a good idea, but then you have to think about all the other expenses such as having blueprints drawn up, all the new codes that must be followed. I own a plank house and have spent the last six years remodeling it. I went through all of the problems you can possibly have when remodeling a plank house. I have installed new electrical, new plumbing, new doors and windows, new heating system, leveled floors and ceilings, built new interior walls, new drywall, anything you can think of I did it to this house. The house is an 1870's Victorian house and I am about 90% finished. When I read in this forum about the problem this woman was having I had to reply to her and try and help her out. Needless to say she was thrilled with the information I supplied her. I have been working in carpentry since I graduated high school in the early 70's and about 75% of the homes I worked in were plank houses. They are very well built homes and with proper upkeep they will last a very long time. If anyone has questions or problems that I can help you with feel free to contact me.

I'm a little fuzzy on what a plank house is, and for all I know I may own one. Many of the houses in NEPA are very old, built with construction methods that may baffle modern contractors. A blog like this can be very helpful.

This next one...I'm not even sure if it counts as a blog. It's the Vimeo site for Matt Taylor, who identifies himself as living in New Milford and says "I live in northeastern pennsylvania. I like to make little videos." I don't know if a collection of apparently unconnected videos counts as a blog - but, what the heck, let's say that it does.

The final blog I'll list in this post is called cdevroe.com. Colin Devroe lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania - or at least did, back in 2005. Many of his recent posts are from the far-off territory known as the Lehigh Valley, which may or may not be part of Northeastern Pennsylvania, depending on who you ask.  From a quick scan of the most recent posts, it seems like this is a "Life" blog as well as a Technology blog. Maybe even a Photo blog!

That's just four, all from the first page of results. Maybe I'll drill down into this some more in the future.

Jenny Hill

This is a blog which, like Jeanne Moran's, was culled from the list of the Top 50 NetworkedBlogs in Scranton. Unlike Jeanne Moran's, there wasn't anything top-level obvious that screamed "Northeastern Pennsylvania," even in the Profile.  But a little poking around revealed some clues: there's a link to Clockface and Plate, "Real Life Reviews" of restaurants - many of which are for places in NEPA. Under "Where I Work" she lists Paper Kite Press in Kingston. Finally, she has a section for "Radio Interviews on WVIA - PBS," NEPA's public broadcasting network. So, we can safely draw the conclusion that Jenny Hill is based in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
