Poor Parking in PA

Rock 107's morning DJ, Prospector, gets angry when he's out and about and notices people who have issues with parking properly.  These inept parkers may have parked in between two spaces, parked in a handicapped spot with no tags, or parked between two meters.  Prospector decided to take his frustrations with these "yambags" to a Tumblr photo blog called "Poor Parking in PA".

http://poorparkingpa.tumblr.com

Have you seen a bad park job in NEPA?  You can submit a picture through the webpage http://poorparkingpa.tumblr.com/submit or via email at Prospector@rock107.com.  Please keep people's names out of the equation when you submit your image.

Maybe, just maybe, together we can help people learn how to park correctly.....

(....but probably not)

2 Tumblrs from Ashley Teatum

Ashley Teatum is another journalist in our area that blogs.  Ashley is a sports writer at the Times Tribune in Scranton.  I learned of her two Tumblr blogs through her Twitter account @tee_tuhm"writer. lit nerd. sports geek. journalist. feminist."

Blog #1:
Feminish.
http://feminish.tumblr.com
"Critically Uncovering the Coverage of Women in Sports"

Blog #2:
Shelvish
http://shelvish.tumblr.com
"It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it." -oscar wilde
"What and how much had I lost by trying to do only what was expected of me instead of what I myself had wished to do?” -Ralph Ellison, from Invisible Man"

Ashley is also in the popular "Dancing with the NEPA Stars" competition...and she's made it all the way to the final round!  It costs a dollar to vote online, but all proceeds go to help the Scranton Cultural Center.  You can vote for Ashley online using this link:  http://www.scrantonculturalcenter.org/ashley-teatum

From the voting page:

Although she is a Staten Island, N.Y., native, Ashley Teatum caught the Scranton bug and stayed after graduating from the University of Scranton in 2009. As a sports reporter for The Times-Tribune, Ashley, 24, covers high school soccer and wrestling. She serves as the vice president of the Alpha Sigma Nu Scranton Alumni Club and also has sung with the University's performance music concert choir as an alum. Ashley lives in West Scranton and is tackling David Foster Wallace's epic novel “Infinite Jest” this summer. She owes her dancing genes to Ms. Mary Saccheri-Spera, her dance teacher in Staten Island who gave Ashley her groove for 13 years.

Best of Luck, Ashley and welcome to the blog roll!

Night & Day: Parenting in shifts

Night & Day: Parenting in shifts is the Tumblr blog of journalists Steph & Mike Sadowski.  This is not your average "mommy blog", folks (not that there's anything wrong with that).  They are a Mom and Dad on a deadline....a deadline to two little girls.

From the about:  We're a pair of journalists raising two little girls. Dad works days as a reporter; Mom works nights as an editor. We're in a constant relay race against tight deadlines.

http://night-dayparenting.tumblr.com/

You can also follow the Sadowski family adventure on Twitter @sadowskifamily.

One other exciting sidebar to this blog post....

A few weeks ago Mike left a message in our NEPA Bloggers Facebook group:  "There aren't many places that would appreciate this, but just thought I'd pass this along that, yes, there are awards for bloggers.  This is from the Pennsylvania Press Managing Editors, who awarded the Poconos blog "PopRox" as best blog in its circulation category in the state Woo hoo!"

You can read more about the award winners here:  http://www.papme.com/JournalismContest/Winners.aspx   (Several CV and TL writers received awards as well!)

Congrats to Mike!  Keep on blogging!

Lindsay Boo's Many Blogs

I believe that I first came across Lindsay's blogs via Twitter, although I can't be sure because this draft post has been sitting around for a while.  I now present to you the many blogs of Lindsay Boo:

Tumblr Blogs:
http://thelindsayboo.tumblr.com/
Travel:  http://lindsaytravels.tumblr.com/
Becoming Vegan:  http://lovetofu.tumblr.com/

and also....

From the about page:

HELLO!
My name is Lindsay Barrasse but I simply go by Lindsay Boo on this thing called the internet. I make zany videos on my YouTube as well as host, edit, direct, write, and star in my own web series called “PUB CULTURE”

I love anything tech, anything nerdy, and most of all the internet. I have a undying love for Battlestar Galactica, Bruce Campbell, and BEER.

I grew up in Scranton, PA but found myself wanting the Hollywood dream. I am working that. My dream is to host a TV show. You can find my IMBD page here! One day there will be more on it.

I went to college for Art as well as Marketing but I primarily bar tend with the way the economy is going these days. Tending bar puts me close to things I like most in this world; beer and people.

I love life. I love to travel. I have a blog dedicated to travel right HERE. For the most part I am just me- a giant nerd and loving it! I enjoy air, bubble baths, and my favorite color is clear.

You can also find Lindsay on Twitter under the username @TheLindsayBoo

40 draft posts still are sitting on our backlog.  I'll be working to clean this mess up during the month of May.

Cardealou

Here's a blogger from NEPA Michelle discovered through Twitter. It's a Tumblr blog, an image reposting blog from the looks of it.

Cardelou
http://cardealou1.tumblr.com/

"Design, Decor, Antiques, Dogs, Cats, Music, Inspiring photos & quotes, gay rights, noh8."

(Unfortunately, this blog hasn't been updated in a while. I wonder if it's still active? The blogger was also very active on Twitter but seems to have stopped posting there at the end of 2011. I hope everything is OK.)

Three from one

Michelle has been very hard at work tracking down blogs to add to the NEPA Blogs link list, and I...have not. The closest I came to adding a blog this past week turned out to be one Michelle added over a month ago! These three blogs are just some of the many that Michelle has located and put on the list to be added.

These blogs are written under two different names, but they're all by the same person! As Catherine Shefski she writes the All Piano blog (http://allpiano.wordpress.com/), a blog which is, unsurprisingly, all about piano. In this guise, Catherine is a piano teacher who has taught at many institutions (see her linked bio for a full list!), and currently teaches at The Music Studio just outside of Scranton. From her bio there:

Catherine Shefski received her undergraduate degree from Smith College. After graduation, she enrolled in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England where she studied with Carola Grindea, founder of the European Piano Teacher’s Association (EPTA) and earned an LGSM Diploma in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. In 1982 she received her M. Mus. Degree in Piano Performance from New England Conservatory in Boston, MA.

...A former faculty member of Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, Ms. Shefski has also held teaching positions at Wilkes Community Conservatory and Doylestown Community Conservatory. She currently teaches over forty piano students at her studio in Northeast Pennsylvania.

But Catherine is also a published author of urban paranormal fiction (The Doppelganger Song) who maintains an eponymous blog under the pen name of Caitlin Sumer (http://caitlinsumer.wordpress.com/). Here she writes not only about her own works of fiction, but provides reviews of and commentary on the works of others.

In addition to these two she also maintains a Tumblr blog, Not Just Piano (http://notjustpiano.tumblr.com/). It's primarily a freeform photo/image blog, and as the title suggests, not all of the posts are related to piano - though many of the earliest ones are.

Three aspects of one person, expressed in blog form. Do you know of anyone else in Northeastern Pennsylvania who has chosen to creatively express their innermost self through the medium of blogging? If so, we'd like to list them here on NEPA Blogs!

My Soul, My Surrender

I'll be honest with you: I don't "get" Tumblr. From what little research I've done, the basic idea - embraced my many users - is that the Tumblr platform is well-suited to a format that just tumbles along, occasionally stopping to say "oh, look at this!" and then quickly moving on. Past posts are forgotten almost as soon as they appear, and new posts - usually still images or looping motion .gifs - are reblogged from sources that the user is following. It almost resembles a photo blog, sort of, kind of, not really. And some Tumblr users do use it as a photo blog. Heck, former Secretary of Labor (and sometime Conan O'Brien crimefighting partner) Robert Reich has a Tumblr blog that looks...well, pretty much like a conventional blog.

My Soul, My Surrender is the title (or current title) of the Tumblr blog located at http://crossroadsdemon.tumblr.com/. This is another of Michelle's finds, by a NEPA blogger who is following the NEPA Blogs Twitter feed. From...well, the little block that I'm assuming is a Tumblr "About" thingie:

hello! i'm samantha, a 24 year old from pennsylvania who is obsessive, sarcastic and a total asshole. it takes a lot to offend me and i usually find humor in every situation. i also like a lot of things, especially supernatural. that's about it.

(It appears that "supernatural" refers to the surprisingly long-running TV series "Supernatural," now in its seventh season.)

If Tumblr is your thing, or if you're familiar with its layout and structure, this may be a great place for you to visit. If you are unfamiliar with Tumblr at all, this will be a great opportunity to see what Tumblr is about. Either way, check it out!

Tumblr Trio

Psssst! NEPA. I have a secret for you.

I have a Twitter addiction. I am the soul figurehead that manages the @nepablogs Twitter account. I scour it at least once a week to see if there are any new bloggers that have decided to give us a follow. Today, I'll be sharing with you the three Tumblr blogs that I came across most recently. Fear not! I still have an extensive queue of Twitter bloggers to add to our blog roll, but I'm trying to break it down into more manageable doses. I think these few Tumblr blogs may snap you out of your mid-week blues......or something like that.

First up...A Tumblr Sports blogger who loves Hockey!

"Lets Go Pens 1105"
http://letsgopens1105.tumblr.com
Hey! My name is Danielle! Just in case you couldn't tell by the title I'm a HUGE hockey fan! My favorite teams are the Penguins, Hurricanes, and Blackhawks. I don't mind any of the other team except the Capitals, Islanders, and of course the Flyers. Favorite players are all the Staals (including Jared!), Jonathan Toews, Jeff Skinner, Deryk Engelland, and Max Talbot!

Next...Christian Kemmerer with a Political Themed Blog.

"No Tea 4 Me"
http://notea4me.tumblr.com
On Twitter: @christiank22

Replacing right-wing extremism with potent home-brewed posts...

Lastly, the spirital blog of Mathew John Kester. He just started up his Tumblr blog today, so there are only 2 posts currently.

"A Wretch Like Mathew"
http://awretchlikemathew.tumblr.com
On Twitter: @awretchlikemat

I am Mathew. I live in the mountains of N.E. Pennsylvania with my wife Kelly, my daughter Zuzu and my son Max. (COMPLETE BIO COMING SOON!)

One of the things we like to drive home about NEPA Blogs, is that there's literally a blog for any and every topic imaginable. As you can see by the wide variety of Tumblr blogs in this post, we certainly a vast variety of local bloggers that have something to interest everyone. Keep those blog submissions a-comin'.

Now about those midweek blues....just think, we are in the downward curve heading towards Friday. Feel better now?

Three from Tumblr

I'll admit it: I'm one of those people who don't "get" Tumblr. Some of the Tumblr blogs I've seen are indistinguishable from blogs hosted on other platforms. Some are just endless streams of disjointed photos, reposted by and from hundreds of other Tumblr users. And some are something in-between, a photo-heavy version of a blog.

I came across this while reviewing the NEPA Blogs SiteMeter "Recent Visits by Referrals:"

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/nepa

OK, that could be interesting. I followed through and found...a picture from Nepal, three from koreanphotoshoots, and a bunch of other things that, as far as I could tell, had nothing to do with Northeastern Pennsylvania. But then I spotted a few that clearly did.

http://curtainsarent.tumblr.com/
Described (in text I can't copy and paste) as "Daily musings of a husband, father of two, full time civil servant, thinker, opinionator, and starter."

A photo blog, with plenty of evidence to indicate the blogger has a connection to NEPA.

A photo blog of Scranton. The photos on the front page (at least) were made using the Instagram app for the iPhone, making them appear to be snapshot photos from the 1970's.

That's just three. Rooting around on Tumblr for photos tagged with "nepa" will probably reveal more. Some other day.
