A few months ago, you may recall, I was doing one of my occasional brute-force blog searches when I discovered that many of the folks linked by NEPA Blogs were having their posts stolen and reposted on another blog, without any sort of links back to their own sites. This practice, known as "scraping," isn't just content theft; it's also theft of advertising revenue, since many of the blogs from which the posts had been "scraped" - and to which they no longer pointed - had revenue-generating ads associated with them which were now detached from the content. The "scraper blog" was, of course, loaded with revenue-generating ads - so all of this content was now working for the owner of the scraper blog, not the people who had created it in the first place.
PennsNet.com - a site found by Michelle - isn't a scraper blog. Instead it's a concatenator site - or, to use the current terminology, it engages in content curation, not content generation. It posts links to news stories from other sources, as well as snippets of those stories - the headline and the first two dozen words or so. As of now it lists stories from four sources: "Citizens Voice," "Scranton Times," "Times Leader," and "WNEP." Each story links back to the original post at the original site. So with this site, it's very convenient to scan through the headline content of three newspapers and one TV station to see what stories of interest they might have, and then click through to read the complete, original story.
From a business point of view, this is a little sketchy: part of the business model of these sites is that you are exposed to ads while you are searching through content, so allowing someone to search through the headline content without the ads eliminates the possibility that someone will spot an ad that interests them and click on it. On the other hand, it's really no different from having four RSS feeds running side by side, each showing the headline content for a different site and inviting you to click through.
Not every story makes it onto an RSS feed, so there will probably be stories you would see on the original sites that you won't see on PennsNet.com. PennsNet.com also isn't technically a blog, as far as I can tell, though it may be by some definitions. But it is very convenient and very useful as a way to quickly see what is making the news in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and to have quick access to four major sources of news in NEPA. For now I'll be adding it to the "Sites About NEPA" section of the sidebar. But first, I may go and check out some of those headlines...

It's been a while since I've done a dual post at NEPA Blogs...that is to say, 2 posts in one day, but STOP THE PRESSES, this website was worthy of it.

I found this in going through the archives of my blog. I'm sure by now, most of you have seen the Coal Speak dictionary over at CoalRegion.com. This is similar in nature to the dictionary there, except for one hilarious thing....it's ILLUSTRATED. You need to check out the link to see what I'm talking about. Too lazy to do that? Here's a quick screen shot:

Scranton Christmas Windows, 1938 - 1960

Vince Sweeney recently posted about how he regrets not having ay old photos of The Globe, and how great it was at Christmastime. Maybe this will help make up for that!
In 2009 Gene Giancini was cleaning out a building on Scranton’s West Side. His family had operated a business in the building for 30 years, and he was in the process of selling it. He found, stacked in the corner, old photos of Christmas window displays from Household Outfitting Company, 306-314 Lackawanna Ave. Mr. Giancini generously donated the photos to the Scranton Public Library. We will be presenting them through this web site.http://scrantonchristmas.blogspot.com/

Luzerne County Courthouse News
Sadly, Northeastern Pennsylvania is in the news for all the wrong reasons these days. The big issue making national and international headlines is the ongoing scandal in the Luzerne County Courthouse. News is coming out of the courthouse so quickly that...well, let me just repost from Gort's blog here:

More, more, more
I finally sat down and added all - well, most - of the blogs Gort and I have been collecting since the last sidebar update and added them to the sidebar! I also removed dead - which I defined as "not functioning," not simply "not updating" - and cybersquatted blogs to a section at the bottom of the sidebar called "City of the Dead."
Some blogs I didn't add because they appear to have gone dead since Gort or I first mentioned them in a post. One blog, which appears to have been updated quite recently, I didn't add because every time I went there, I was inundated with pop-ups (blocked, of course) to the point that I had to Ctrl-Alt-Delete my way out. This isn't the only blog that hit me with pop-ups, but it's the only one that has affected me so strongly. Maybe I can get a message to the blogger and we can see if there's anything they can do to fix this.

I just ran through the Sitemeter to see how people are getting to the site, and I followed a few of their searches back to look for any NEPA Blogs I've managed to miss. Here are a few:

We figured if we created an unlisted, private website where people could login under an alias, without fear of retribution, we could dig up some real dirt on these pigs. They will soon find out there is nobody they can trust.

Even yet still more NEPA Blogs
I've hunted down a few more NEPA Blogs. But first, here are two more from the author of QAZSE.com:
- twisp.com (actually located at http://twisp.wordpress.com/) is described as "East-West poetry."
- Baldwin Brothers (http://baldwinbrothers.wordpress.com/) is a humor blog - cartoons, jokes, and the like.
- I'm not quite sure how I found Spartacus the Monkey, but it took me a while to decipher that it is an honest-to-goodness NEPA Blog.
- Frank H. Jump's Fading Ad Blog isn't exclusively - or even predominantly - about Northeastern Pennsylvania, but it does have a NEPA category which includes almost all of the "fading ads" - giant ads that were once painted on the sides of buildings, like the late lamented Mr. Peanut in Wilkes-Barre - that he has photographed in the NEPA area.
- For those mourning the apparent passing of Northeastern Pennsylvania Media News and Gossip forum, I have found a site that appears to serve a similar function, at least as far as radio is concerned: the Radio-Info.com Northeast Pennsylvania discussion boards.

A new blog for an old school
GAR Memorial
It's a MySpace site devoted to all things past and present that have to do with GAR Memorial High School in Wilkes-Barre.
About me:
This is for everyone that attended or graduated from GAR High School. If you know anyone else that went to GAR, pass this site along to them.
Who I'd like to meet:
All students, faculty and administration, past and present. If you are not associated with GAR High School as a student, teacher, administrator, staff member or alumni, please do not make a friend request.
If you have family or friends that attend, graduated from or teach at GAR, please let them know this is here and if they have a myspace page, invite them to join us. You may be able to help a graduating class find a few more alumni for a reunion!
We've gotten several notes saying thanks for helping me reconnect to an old friend. This page was set up to help people reconnect to old friends and teachers and keep people updated on what's going on at GAR. Once school is back in session, sports schedules and activites will be posted, so be sure to keep us updated on what's going on.

Who we are: We are an organization promoting traditional music, dance, and storytelling in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
About the music: Monthly "singing circles" have been on-going since 1982, and often start with a pot-luck dinner. They are informal gatherings, usually held the first Friday of each month at a member's home. We begin with a few sing-alongs, then we take turns around the circle, offering something we have prepared, requesting a song or story, or just come to listen and enjoy homemade entertainment. We use a "democratic" format (taking turns), which encourages people of all levels of accomplishment to participate.

A Blog of Nanticoke
I realize I've been neglecting this site lately, mainly on behalf of my daily posts to my personal blog, Another Monkey. So naturally I'm dealing with this by starting another blog! This one is called A Blog of Nanticoke and it can be found at http://www.nanticokeblog.blogspot.com/ . The goal of this blog is to showcase Nanticoke, its businesses, and its bloggers in the way that this site does for the larger Northeastern Pennsylvania area.
This blog is actually just the first step in a plan I've been working on the last few days to vastly increase my hometown's presence in the blogosphere. Some of the content will duplicate stuff I've written here and on Another Monkey, some of it will be brand new, and some of it...well, we'll see how things work out.
It's just in its initial stages right now, but I'll try to get it in fighting shape within a few days. If you are a Nanticoke blogger, or know of any good Nanticoke websites, please let me know, and I'll be sure to include them on A Blog of Nanticoke!

A few more sites
My apologies to the Card Lady for not linking to her earlier. She was recently in the Southwestern USA and has some great pics.
The NEPA Rainbow Alliance has a blog and a bunch of other sites. What they say is that's it OK to be gay and be proud of it. More power to you folks. I'm so sick of the hate that is directed toward members of my family just because they're "different."
Voice of the People backs Lou Barletta and is holding rallies. Another group that aims to divide us instead of uniting people.
Coal Region Voice down in Sunbury may be technically out of our area but is a good read.
And finally a news/politics site Scranton-at-Large. His mission statement:

I just read about this site in today's Wilkes-Barre Citizens' Voice, though the Pittston Sunday Dispatch did an article back on March 4. It's a site all about Duryea, PA, called duryeapa.com. Background on the site is on the main page, and click here for the site's contents. I'll be listing this in the "Sites About NEPA" category.

Flushing out the Bloggers of NEPA
I haven't edited the NEPA Blogs template to add Dr. Tara yet - I will shortly. But first...
I was thinking of doing a compilation of all of the NEPA Blogs bloggers' entries on the flood of '06. But then I realized that that's the whole point of the sidebar: you can click on each blogger individually and see what they are saying about this event that is affecting all of us. Then I thought about it some more, and realized that this would be a prime time to search for more NEPA Bloggers, since many people would be being affected by this event and blogging about it.
The flaw in this plan is that there are as many people from outside the area blogging about the flooding in Wilkes-Barre and NEPA in general as there are bloggers from NEPA doing it. So while it's cool to see New Orleans bloggers pointing their fingers at Wilkes-Barre and saying, "Look at them! They're smart! They built a levee designed to hold the worst flood they ever had! They invested in it! Why didn't we do that?" *, it doesn't help me find more bloggers who are blogging away here in glorious NEPA.
Still, I found a bunch. I'll get to adding them soon. Sometime after I add Dr. Tara!
